One of our oldest clients Damien owns several fast-food restaurants and is always going back and forth to make sure all run smoothly. He always ask about new investments and products that could help. One day he called and said he had $500,000 to invest and wanted to know if we had any new products to place the funds. Our recommendation shocked him. Rather than invest in a new product, we threw out the idea of using the funds to update the floor plan of his restaurants, such as putting in a flat screen for guests. Most other wealth management firms would take the $500,000 and immediately invest it in their own product. Here though, we wanted the client to invest in himself and his business.
A huge benefit of being retainer-based planning is we are not required to recommend investment products when clients come to us with funds. We can recommend ideas such as investing the money to expand or renovate your business. We help you keep tracking of your planning goals, which may include putting money aside to renovate your business or even figuring out if you can start a 401k plan for your employees. There is more to business planning than putting your assets into investments. We have implemented “buy sell” agreements as well as create a plan to keep key employees. We are able to help Damien keep track of all of his various assets, even ones under his business, thanks to him taking advantage of LIFE Vision and linking all of his accounts for us to see.
Be like Damien. Do not have all assets in different investment products. Work with an advisor who will not want to simply recommend you invest your money, but will tell you to take some and put it towards elevating your business.
